An antenna tuning unit (ATU), also called an antenna coupler, matches the impedance of the ship's long wire or whip antenna to the 50-ohm output of the MF/HF transceiver. Without correct matching the transmitter cannot deliver its power to the antenna. The ATU5515 is mounted outdoors, close to the antenna feed point, and automatically tunes every time the radio transmits on a new frequency, including before DSC distress and safety calls. Inside the weatherproof housing are switched coils, high-voltage capacitors, RF relays and a control board that selects the correct network for each frequency.

The large green main board, marked PL5515V2 (board label 09130001), carries the complete matching network: air-wound coils, RF switching relays, capacitors and the control circuitry. When a single board fails, customers often search for the board marking PL5515 or PL5515V2.
Several large black air-wound coils with clear tapping bars form the variable inductance of the tuning network. Part numbers are not printed on the coils (Not verified).
